Primary purpose of the role

Provides executive support and administrative services to the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) to meet DPIE obligations under the Animal Research Act.

Key accountabilities

Receive, assess and advise on draft research protocols, ensuring that corrected protocols are tabled at
the earliest AEC meeting. Review, and develop recommendations in relation to the functioning of the
AEC, particularly with respect to the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of its operations.
• Provide technical advice about acceptable animal welfare, husbandry and research practices.
• Provide high level executive and administrative support to the Animal Ethics Committee to ensure
responsibilities under the Animal Welfare Act are met including: organisation of meetings and
preparation of agendas; collation and distribution of meeting papers; and, recording and distribution of
minutes.
• Draft and prepare correspondence, reports, briefings and other documents on behalf of the Committee,
often with a technical component.
• Contribute to and assist with the drafting, editing and publication of guidelines and other materials
relating to animal care and ethics and/or the work of the Committee.
Respond to requests for information, advice or assistance relating to the work of the Committee,
including where appropriate referring such requests to the Committee Chair or to the Manager,
Stakeholder Liaison and Group Coordination.
• Develop and maintain AEC databases and records management systems for the work of the
Committee.
• Manage the Committee’s expenditure and budget, including: preparing all documentation relating to
expenditure, including payment vouchers, travel claims, petty cash, etc.; arranging authorisation for,
and payment of accounts; monitoring and reporting to the Committee on budget performance

• Required to liaise and negotiate with people internally and externally on a range of matters relating to
the operations of the AEC, including some contentious matters. In providing reports, the position must
be able to accurately reflect, synthesise and convey the views of others.

Key knowledge and experience

Degree relevant to the position, with an ability to understand research, conservation and animal welfare issues,
and to write and speak fluently on these matters.

Understanding of the Animal Research Act, National Parks and Wildlife Act, and the Threatened Species
Conservation Act, together with the ability to interpret relevant legislation and guidelines
